L.A. Day 4: Making 60 Seconds Count and Talent Acquisition with Kevin Huvane

The 60-Second Pitch with Aéro Film Owner Lance O’Connor

Today our students received inside information on career readiness, punctuality and public speaking from Aéro Productions owner and Executive Producer Lance O'Connor.

Being on time is such an important part of working in this industry.  He gave the example that if everyone is going on a bus to a meeting and you know the bus is running late, jump in a taxi and be the first to be seated at the meeting.  This will make a huge statement that you care and it will be memorable to those in charge.

What you wear is important so think about what statement you are making when entering an interview or a meeting to pitch your project.  You never know who you are going to meet and you do not get a second chance on a first impression.  Each opportunity of meeting people should be treated as an audition.

Mr. O'Connor spent a lot of energy helping students realize that they need to be ready to give a 60-second introduction for every meeting they are in.  This should be concise and also offer an opportunity for you to ask for what you need.  Whenever addressing someone, keep the eye contact strong and engaging.  Don’t list 30 things you want to accomplish-just focus on one thing and make your narrative support that.  Do not rehash anything that has already been said in the room as you only have 60 seconds so do not waste it-every second counts!  Don’t forget to smile!  Each student practiced their 60-second introduction, received feedback
Recruiting Talent with Creative Artists Agency’s Kevin Huvane

Kevin Huvane is the managing director and partner of Creative Artists Agency (CAA), considered to be the top talent agency in L.A. Mr. Huvane grew up in the Bronx and told his narrative of how he rose to the top.  He worked hard and took opportunities when they arose. The biggest advice he gave to students was to go with their intuition.  Mr. Huvane noted that he knew actresses like Sarah Jessica Parker, Meryl Streep, and Julia Roberts would be stars because he went with his intuition. He also told the students a lesson his mother taught him when he was younger and that is to do one good deed a day.  Mr. Huvane explained how CAA is a collaborative workspace and includes a mission of diversity. East Boston High School film student Sebastian Montoya Parra was able to harness what he learned earlier in the day about a 60-second first impression and utilized his time to introduce himself and ask about internships. Mr. Huvane was quite impressed that Sebastian brought this up and told him about the application process.
After the presentation with Mr. Huvane, the students went on a tour of CAA and learned about the different jobs in this talent agency.  You can read more about Mr. Huvane here at https://www.backstage.com/magazine/article/list-agent-kevin-huvane-casting-directors-vital-role-hollywood-2274/.
